Meta Building World’s Fastest AI Supercomputer for Metaverse

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has initiated the construction of one of the world’s fastest supercomputers.

Mark Zuckerberg has stated that this supercomputer, equipped with 6,080 graphics processing units, is set to become the fastest machine ever built specifically for artificial intelligence.

Meta aims to have this new supercomputer operational by the end of 2022. The second phase of the project involves boosting the graphics processing capacity to 16,000 units, indicating Meta’s significant investment in creating a visually rich Metaverse.

The supercomputer, named the Research Super Cluster (RSC), will leverage its immense graphics processing power to offer real-time translation services for thousands of people speaking different languages and swiftly analyze images and data.

Zuckerberg emphasized that “The experiences we’re building for the metaverse require enormous computing power, and the RSC will enable new AI models that can learn from trillions of examples, understand hundreds of languages, and more.”

Meta researchers Kevin Lee and Shubho Sengupta noted in a blog post that the RSC is about 20 times faster than their previous Nvidia machine from 2017 when it comes to training AI systems for image recognition, a key AI application.

The new AI supercomputer is anticipated to address major challenges faced by Facebook, especially with its self-monitoring and learning capabilities.
